1999: Seven Niles students accused and arrested on charges of threatening fellow students are expelled for the remainder of the year, including a girl who had all As and Bs and apologized. Superintendent Patrick Guliano said the rules were clear and that the students must go to summer school or they will fail the year.

John Ford Elsaesser, a 1969 Cardinal Mooney graduate and nationally known bankruptcy lawyer, is named president of the American Bankruptcy Institute.

U.S. Rep. Dennis Eckart, D-11 th, whose district includes part of Trumbull County, says that while President Reagan and Henry Kissinger espouse a $30 billion fund for Central America, he and other Democrats would prefer spending money in a "Central America" that includes Ohio, Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, and Pennsylvania.

1949: Jack Lillie, 9, of Kinsman, is reunited with his 6-year-old pony "Cocoa," which he sold at auction to pay for his mother's funeral. When horsetraders learned why he sold the pony, they collected $200 to buy Cocoa back. 

Hollywood's most eligible bachelor, James Stewart, is engaged to be married to Gloria Hatrick McLean of New York. He popped the question after a dinner to celebrate his 41st birthday.

The Atomic Energy Commission announced it will require a loyalty oath and nonCommunist affidavit from 497 students awarded government scholarships to study atomic energy.
