Eagle scout restores historic bell at Springfield Elementary School

SPRINGFIELD TWP., Mahoning Co., Ohio - A former Springfield Local High School student used his Eagle Scout project to restore the district's historical bell.
John Roland completed the work on the bell which has been in the district since 1874.
The 300-pound bell was most recently dedicated at the old Elementary School 30 years ago.
When the new elementary school opened in 2015, Roland recognized its absence and how bad of shape it was in and realized it needed new life.
"Stuff such as pitting and some other minor cracks and little dents, those were a little harder to get rid of," Roland said. "We kept a lot of that and it looks more authentic that way. I'm very proud. I'm just glad the whole community can enjoy it now."
The school plans to use the bell as part of a rewards system for student achievement and behavior.
