Grove City College responds to Snapchat threat to 'shoot up' school
GROVE CITY, Pa. - On February 8, Grove City College student Ellen Otterman of Vermont, was arrested after causing panic across campus by posting a selfie on Snapchat.
Otterman allegedly wore a face mask and a hoodie in the selfie with the caption "Am I ill or about to shoot up a school? Stay tuned for updates."
According to an affidavit, Snapchat contacted authorities in Mercer County providing them with GPS data showing the 21-year-old was on the campus at the time the selfie was allegedly sent to friends back in Vermont.
Two weeks after her arrest, an email from the college's Vice President for Student Life, Larry Hardesty, read in part: "The student's post was an ill-advised jest connected to a friend's comment earlier in the day about her appearance. The posting student was wearing a mask because she was suffering from the flu. The post was directed to a small group of friends hundreds of miles away"
Despite the college allowing Otterman to stay on campus, she is charged with terroristic threats and disorderly conduct.
A preliminary hearing is scheduled on March 26 at 9:30 a.m.
